After an incredibly successful 2022 capped off with the very popular Decarbonization Panel and Past Presidents Night, the Southern Alberta Chapter is looking to keep the momentum going in the new year. January features returning presenter Greg Scrivener and we’re all looking forward to our Diversity In ASHRAE-themed meeting in March.
Please keep in mind that we are always accepting locally designed projects for ASHRAE Technology Awards. If you or someone at your company has a project you would like to submit, feel free to let us know and take a quick flip through the ASHRAE website (Technology Awards Program Overview (ashrae.org)) to get an idea of submission requirements.

Thank you to everyone who attended our virtual meetings this year. We successfully co-hosted two events with the Northern Alberta Chapter; we discussed optimal indoor environment conditions to counteract COVID with Dr. Stephanie Taylor and design of healthcare critical environments for pandemic situations with guest speaker Don McDonald. In November, we had the pleasure to partner with Buildex for their Buildings Week virtual event. We were able to host Todd Hirsh from ATB in January to receive some helpful 2021 market insights, and in March we had a virtual presidential visit with ASHRAE President Chuck Gulledge. Keep an eye out for registration details for more events soon.
If you have any speaker suggestions or topics you would like to see presented next year, please reach out to someone on the board so that we can continue to provide events that are most relevant to you.
Also, for anyone looking to submit an entry for the 2021-22 technology awards, the deadline is June 15 for the short form entry, which can be found at the link below.

In February, we received great feedback from our visit from ASHRAE’s past president, Sheila Hayter. Her case study on a research support facility provided great insights on how to incorporate renewable energy (RE) technologies into building designs and operations.
As I am sure you are aware, in light of the pandemic we had to cancel the ASHRAE Learning Institute (ALI) training course, High-Performance Building Design: Applications and Future Trends. We are continuing to review the situation and may be able to offer this course at a later date. We will keep you posted. In the meantime, on May 14th, the Vancouver Island chapter is providing a webinar on “Promoting the HVAC Industry for a Sustainable Future”. If you are interested in attending, you can register on their website https://www.ashrae.bc.ca/.
During this difficult time, ASHRAE has put together an Epidemic Task Force and provided some technical resources (https://www.ashrae.org/technical-resources/resources) to assist in addressing the challenges of the current pandemic and future epidemics as it relates to HVAC systems. I encourage you to review the information they have provided.
Stay safe!

We had great feedback from the presentation in November on “Which comes first: Comfort or Efficiency?”. by Distinguished Lecturer, Robert Bean. It was an interesting discussion reviewing ASHRAE Standard 55 and how large of an effect radiant heat transfer has on the perceived comfort in our buildings.
Upcoming Speakers
In February, we are pleased to be hosting ASHRAE’s past president, Sheila Hayter. Her presentation, “Integrating Renewable Energy Systems”, will be reviewing technical opportunities, means, and methods for incorporating renewable energy (RE) technologies into building designs and operations.
In March, we are also hosting an ASHRAE Learning Institute (ALI) training course, High-Performance Building Design: Applications and Future Trends, presented by Tom Lawrence. This course is being offered at this year’s ASHRAE Winter Conference, so save the trip and see it in Calgary instead! It will be a 3 hour session held in the afternoon, prior to the monthly meeting. During the meeting, Tom will also be providing a presentation, The Coming Age of a Smart Grid and Smart Buildings, which provides an overview of the smart grid and how it relates to buildings and their systems.

For our first speaker, the Southern Alberta Chapter is excited to host 2019-2020 ASHRAE president, Darryl K. Boyce at this year’s past president’s night, October 28th. He has previously served on the board of directors as treasurer, vice president and director-at-large, and has received multiple rewards for his service. His theme for the Society year is Building for People and Performance: Achieving Operational Excellence.
For additional information, you can review Darryl’s presidential address in the August 2019 ASHRAE Journal.
Upcoming Speakers
In November, we are pleased to be hosting Robert Bean. He is a third term ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer, recipient of the Lou Flagg Award, Distinguished Service Award and instructor for the ASHRAE Learning Institute. Robert has authored many papers, articles and course curriculums and serves on numerous technical committees related to indoor environmental quality, building and energy systems. We look forward to his insights in his presentation, “Which comes first: Comfort or Efficiency?”.

Upcoming Speakers
We are excited to host Devin Abellon as the Distinguished Lecturer for our March dinner meeting. Mr. Abellon will present “The (Un) Ethical Engineer: a study in principle and practice.” This crowd favorite presentation is an interactive, multimedia, dramatic presentation that explores these issues through the eyes of a well-intentioned engineer.
Technical Pin-Up
The Southern Alberta Chapter was pleased to host Distinguished Lecturer, Greg Scrivener at our February dinner Meeting. Mr. Scrivener presented “Canadian Refrigeration Safety Code,” which reviewed the Canadian code requirements that apply to the location and installation of refrigerant piping in both industrial and commercial applications.
For those interested in learning more about some of the refrigeration topics presented, I recommend having a read through these past ASHRAE Journal articles.
“Keeping Cool – Timeline of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning,” Bernard Nagengast, 2007.
“Progress Report on Alternative Refrigerants,” Mary Kate McGowan, 2019.
“VRF Design Considerations in Cold Climates,” Scott Schuetter and Scott Hackel, 2017.
