Student Activities Update - January 2022

A tour of MacKimmie Tower was organised by the University for Calgary ASHRAE student branch on December 9th for students to learn about the mechanical system in this unique building. MacKimmie Tower is one of most energy efficient buildings on a Canadian post secondary campus. It is a net-zero carbon building, with mechanical and electrical systems that have been optimised to reduce energy use and carbon footprint. On-site photovoltaics and rainwater harvesting contribute to the building’s environmental targets.

Student Activities Update

The last few months have been challenging for Student Activities at SAC ASHRAE as a lot of the planned activities like capstone projects for students and events had react to the pandemic. Challenges included cancelled presentations, quarantined prototypes and cancel building tours. However, the students have been adaptive in completing their project deliverables. Attached are some of the images from the Capstone projects:

  • University of Calgary Capstone: Low Energy Cooling Tower

  • SAIT: Low Energy Residential Cooling Device

Student Activities Update

U of C Student Branch Activities

The Student Branch started off 2019 with an exciting new event. They ran the first ever tutorial session for Autodesk Revit. It was very well received with lots of positive feedback. The tutorial session is intended to provide a stepping stone for students interested in joining the Building Systems industry. It also allows the students to interact with industry professionals in a meaningful manner. The Student Branch hopes to turn this successful event into an annual tradition.

U of C Capstone Project

The Students are well on their way to completing their projects. After going through a meticulous design and build phase they are now on their final stages of testing their designs. The design group will be presenting their findings of designing and optimizing an Energy Recovery Ventilator at the next SAC ASHRAE Dinner.

An Update on the U of C Capstone Project and An Unsolicited Project

U of C Capstone Project

This year’s capstone project is well underway. Their project is to design and build a prototype heat recovery ventilator for a residential application. Critically, they are to test the performance of the heat recovery ventilator against their predictions. The students are deep into the detailed design after completing a rigorous comparative analysis of different heat recovery technologies. We look forward to seeing the final product in 2019.

An Unsolicited Capstone Project

The Student Activities Committee was surprised to be contacted by a student proposed capstone project. Fourth year engineering students can pick an industry sponsored project, or propose their own. This project is similar to the ASHRAE proposed project last year, that is design and build a greenhouse. However, their project is different. It specifically targets the home cannabis grower given new federal legislation. The Student Activities Committee is working with them, providing guidance and feedback on the design.

Happy holidays
